]]>
Today, ASTM International announced the expansion of its Powder Bed Fusion – Laser Beam (PBF-LB) Machine Operator Certification program. The expansion includes two additional machine original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), 3D Systems Corporation and Nikon SLM Solutions, and added more metal AM systems from EOS. The program was developed by the ASTM International Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM CoE). This certification provides a benchmark for assessing reliable and competent operations of metal PBF-LB machines.

Built on the joint ISO/ASTM standard for qualifying machine operators of laser metal PBF machines and equipment (ISO/ASTM 52942:2020), the certification provides a demonstration of an operator’s skill, competency, and compliance with the globally recognized standard. The operator certification is part of a larger certification initiative to assure consistency and reproducibility, and to meet specific product quality requirements, especially in regulated industries.

The ASTM certification consists of both theoretical and practical assessments to evaluate the knowledge of the PBF-LB operator. The program ensures competencies in the following:

  • Additive Manufacturing Procedure Specification (APS);
  • Standard operating procedures;
  • Machine management and build process monitoring;
  • Operator Maintenance of systems; and
  • Powder material family specializations.

Assessments specific to machine models are required for certifying operators of a particular metal platform according to the standard. Three leading metal AM technology providers, 3D Systems, EOS, and Nikon SLM Solutions are now part of this program. These organizations worked closely with ASTM to create the operator assessments for their metal AM systems.

3D Systems, will introduce the program for its widely adopted DMP Flex 350 production printer and will expand to other production AM systems in the future.

EOS added EOS M 400 and EOS M 400-4 to the portfolio, along with EOS M 290 which was the first machine model introduced to this certification program.

Nikon SLM Solutions will introduce the certification program to its industrial production range AM machines, SLM 280, SLM 500, and SLM NXG XII 600.

“Structured certification programs are fundamental to the integration and acceptance of AM technologies within the industry,” states Dr. Mohsen Seifi, ASTM International’s vice president of global advanced manufacturing programs. “This is a significant stride in addressing the industry’s need for certified personnel and promoting a uniform standard of excellence. We anticipate further expansion to other platforms and continuous collaboration with essential industry players to ensure the AM technology is utilized reliably and proficiently.”

The post ASTM International Unveils Additive Manufacturing Quality (AMQ) Certification Program appeared first on AM CoE.

]]>
ASTM International, a global standards organization, has announced the launch of the Additive Manufacturing Quality (AMQ) Certification program for manufacturers using metal AM. This certification program was developed because of industry analysis, user perspective, and identification of gaps that exist within the additive manufacturing industry.  The program demonstrates additive manufacturers’ capability to produce parts with consistent quality by complying with published ISO/ASTM standards with a multi-industry focus.

So far, four major additive manufacturers, Sintavia from FL, USA, Morf3D from CA, USA, MIMO TECHNIK from CA, USA, and ST Engineering Land Systems from Singapore, have been certified against this program, showcasing their commitment to industry quality

The AMQ certification program is built based on two joint ISO/ASTM standards: ISO/ASTM 52901-2017 “Additive Manufacturing – General Principles – Requirements for Purchased AM Parts” and ISO/ASTM 52904-2019 “Additive Manufacturing – Process Characteristics and Performance – Practice for Metal Powder Bed Fusion Process to Meet Critical Applications.” These standards serve as the foundation for the certification program, which has been developed in collaboration with input from various additive manufacturers, end-users, and ASTM members/partners.

The AMQ certification program ensures that manufacturers adhere to requirements for purchased AM parts, implement an AM-specific quality management system, and maintain operation and production control of the metal powder bed fusion (PBF) process. The program is designed with a modular approach, allowing organizations to choose individual certifications or bundle them based on their specific needs to establish a facility that meets the requirements for quality part production.

In addition to the AMQ Certification, ASTM International currently offers two other certification programs for AM: AM Personnel Certification and Facility Safety Certification. The AM Personnel Certification certifies AM operators to be qualified for producing parts using metal laser powder bed fusion (PBF-LB/M) processes on specific metal AM platforms, ensuring competent machine operations. The Facility Safety Certification evaluates an AM facility for safe and compliant operations per published codes and standards.

“We are excited to announce the launch of the Additive Manufacturing Quality (AMQ) Certification program, which highlights the commitment of additive manufacturers to producing parts with consistent quality,” said Dr. Mohsen Seifi, ASTM International vice president of global advanced manufacturing programs. “This certification, along with our other AM certifications, provides the industry with a reliable means to demonstrate their dedication to excellence and compliance with established standards. We are proud to support the growth of AM through our comprehensive certification programs.”

“Digital construction is expected to have a major impact on manufacturing innovation and competitiveness,” notes Mohsen Seifi, Ph.D., ASTM International’s vice president of global manufacturing programs. “This workshop and related roadmap will play a crucial role in the adoption and implementation of digital construction moving forward.”

The workshop discussions will contribute to the development of a roadmap for digitalizing the construction sector to improve U.S. manufacturing innovation and competitiveness. Benefits will include increasing productivity and safety; reducing carbon footprint, material waste, and the reliance on labor; creating a green and sustainable construction industry; and enabling construction on Earth and beyond.

The roadmap will focus on the following major technologies and application spaces:

• Advanced Technologies: Additive manufacturing, robotics and automation, big data, Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, simulation, augmented reality, and cybersecurity
• Key Applications: Sustainable buildings, smart infrastructures, mass housing, disaster response, pandemic preparedness, and construction in space.

Workshop attendance will be limited. To ensure a range of perspectives are included in the roadmap, interested stakeholders are invited to participate in a brief survey.
